"Relaunched: Making Old Web Content New (and Useful!) Again"

OVERVIEW: Understanding the needs of your stakeholders is vital, no matter what organization or industry you are in. It can be easy to forget that we, as government records managers have stakeholders. Our stakeholders include everyday Rhode Islanders, business owners, Elected Officials, the General Assembly, and other state agencies.

The RI Department of State is dedicated to increasing transparency, civic engagement, and practicing and promoting good government in Rhode Island. A key part of our commitment to transparency includes a major effort to make resources effective and accessible across platforms to support government employees and the public’s understanding of public records.

This session will focus on the relaunched “Managing Government Records” webpages, and how changing how we presented complex content by re-thinking our audience enabled us to build a completely new website that is now a useful resource for both members of the public trying to understand and access public records, and the state agencies who are charged with managing them. We will talk through our collaborative process, the challenges we faced, and the strategies we used to overcome them.
