"Digitizing Your Archival Materials"

OVERVIEW: Permanent records, historical documents, agency publications, photos, maps, and more – providing digital access to your archival collections can be both an urgent need and a daunting task.

Defining the scope and scale of your project is the first step to any digital reformatting initiative.

What materials do you plan to digitize and on what timeline?

  • How can you estimate the number of images you'll get from an archival box, filing cabinet drawer, or linear foot of shelf space?
  • Which formats can go straight to the studio, and which need to be prepared before they can be digitized?
  • What standards apply to your project? Do you need to comply with FADGI or M-19-21?
  • How will the metadata you capture help users access and navigate your collection?
  • Will the work be done all at once or in stages? What should be digitized first?

Join Backstage as we explore how to assess your materials, define the scope, and get your next digitization project underway.
