"I Pelt You!? An Update on ISO Standards Related to Long-term Digital Preservation, Including OAIS"

OVERVIEW: The Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System (OAIS) and related ISO standards have recently been updated. In this session members of the Working Group that produced and maintain these standards will give an overview of each of the standards and provide an update on what is new in the latest editions of the standards. The OAIS Reference Model (ISO 14721) is recognized worldwide as the gold standard for the long-term preservation of digital information. ISO 16363, Audit and Certification of Trustworthy Digital Repositories, is the standard that is used to measure conformance with the OAIS Reference Model. ISO 16919, Requirements for Bodies Providing Audit and Certification of Candidate Trustworthy Digital Repositories, lists the ISO requirements for organizations carrying out audits and certifications of Trustworthy Digital Repositories. Lastly, we will discuss the new ISO standard, Information Preparation to Enable Long Term Use (IPELTU), affectionately known by the Working Group as, I Pelt You! The purpose of this standard is to provide guidance to the creators of information to ensure they capture and maintain sufficient additional information about the information they create so that it remains useful and usable over the long term. The session will also include a presentation on the Working Group’s latest project – to produce a Maturity Model for Digital Preservation.

For those in the audience who are not familiar with these related ISO standards, we will offer a brief introduction to each standard and illustrate how they apply to archival and records management work. For those who are already familiar with the standards, they will learn about the changes in the standards that may affect their work going forward. All audience members will learn about a new standard – IPELTU – that provides guidance on addressing long-term preservation at the earliest stages of the records lifecycle (i.e., creation and initial (active) use).

This session directly addresses one of the topics in the call for session proposals - Electronic Records ISO Standards, Preservation, and Access.

Participants can expect to gain the latest information about the seminal ISO standards for the long-term preservation of digital information directly from the authors of those standards. They will also learn how to obtain free copies of the standards.
