TITLE: "Social Media: The Records Management Challenge"

OVERVIEW: Government entities and public officials are increasing their use of social media to provide improved services, enable citizen interaction, and increase overall transparency in government. Social media sites provide governments the ability to explore new ways of working and shifting communication patterns. For governments, social media can add valuable audio, video and interactive capabilities without substantial upfront costs.

However, just because cost is not a major consideration to a government entering into the world of social media, does not mean that there aren’t other important considerations that need to be taken into account prior to establishing a social media presence. Additionally, the gray lines of government versus personal social media interactions are beginning to be tested in courts around the country.

This webinar will provide an overview of how government entities and officials use social media platforms; the records management aspects of social media; unique challenges associated with capturing and disposing of social media content; how to manage and respond to citizen interactions with government social media; and how best to balance being both a public employee and private citizen on social media, especially in light of recent judicial rulings in this area.

After attending this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the challenges associated with capture, retention and disposition of social media content
  • Better manage and respond to citizen interactions on social media
  • Identify best practices for establishing and using  government and personal social media pages for public officials
  • Point to case law relating to public and private use of social media by public officials
  • Have access to a free, interactive social media training to share with others or use as a model
