Session 4: "How Modernizing RIM Got Me 'to the Table'"

OVERVIEW: Data, information, records, privacy, have increasingly become a risk for many government organizations. The complex mosaic of privacy, data, and records laws in the U.S., and now the GDPR, will, if not already, threatens the traditional ways we do business and potentially increases our exposure to litigation.  How we address these issues in an organization is the key to mitigating risk, but who does the organization ask to come “to the table”?

The Records professional of course!

Records and Information Management has long been the “go-to” when organizations have needed to understand its legal compliance with its records and information assets. We utilize many proven principles, standards, and tools needed to address the demands of this complex environment. Whether asked to map, build classification schemas, or analyze the information environment, we can do it.  Today, however we are often ignored or forgotten. Most do not understand the value and expertise we bring “to the table” because records are just paper.

We can change that perception.  To “get to the table” we need to demonstrate our proficiency in understanding the information environment and provide sensible solutions that work for our business partners. We need to illustrate how records and information can help deliver real solutions to address the ever changing information environment.  When we do this, organization have no reason not to ask us “to the table”.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Why I was not “at the table”
  2. Understanding my place “at the table” and why I need to be there
  3.  Adapting RIM principles, standards, and tools to the modern information environment
  4. Building relationships: Getting our partners to advocate for me.
  5. Delivering result that work demonstrated why I needed to be “at the table”
