OVERVIEW:
In this webinar presentation, Photograph Conservator Sarah Casto introduces attendees to the material makeup of photographs, highlighting how these materials influence long-term preservation. She discusses common forms of deterioration, shares examples of conservation treatments she has performed throughout her career, and provides practical guidelines for caring for photographic materials. Topics include proper handling, storage and display considerations, and basic emergency preparedness to help safeguard collections.

Sarah Casto
is the Photograph and Paper Senior Conservator at The Ohio State University Libraries in Columbus, Ohio, where she performs conservation treatments to stabilize and improve the condition of paper items and photographs in the Libraries Special Collections. Before joining OSU Libraries in 2023, she was Assistant Conservator at the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York and Photograph Conservation Fellow at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas. She completed internships at the Art Institute of Chicago, The Better Image, the Smithsonian Institution Archives and Archives of American Art, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. She received her M.A. and Certificate of Advanced Study in Art Conservation from SUNY Buffalo State University and BFA in Photography from Bowling Green State University.
