"Novice to Know-How: Building Digital Preservation Expertise"
February 5, 2026

OVERVIEW: Many of those taking on digital preservation can, at times, feel overwhelmed by the scope of the challenge. How could anyone possibly keep up with the ever-evolving digital landscape while ensuring long-term access to important digital content? Through a partnership between The National Archives (TNA) in the UK and the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC), a curriculum was developed to provide learners with the skills required to develop and implement digital preservation workflows within their organization. Currently (as of 2025), four 'Novice to Know-How' courses are offered by these organizations and can be accessed on this web page: https://dpc.getlearnworlds.com/.

In this webinar, we will explore key portions of the free, online, asynchronous Digital Preservation for Beginners course with a deeper dive on select topics. Information will also be provided about the other 3 free courses DPC and TNA offer in an online learning management platform (Building a Digital Asset Register; Providing Access to Preserved Digital Content; and Email Preservation).

The Digital Preservation for Beginners course’s learning objectives are straightforward and practical. After completing the full course learners will be able to:

  • Explain what Digital Preservation is
  • Prioritize digital preservation actions at their organization
  • Develop and implement simple digital preservation workflows

Questions about this free curriculum and digital preservation more broadly will be welcome. The presenter, Anna Perricci, will be speaking on behalf of the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC), which is a UK-based charity with a growing presence in the Americas. The DPC builds and sustains a welcoming and inclusive global community that works together to bring about a sustainable future for our digital assets.

After attending this webinar, attendees will be able to better understand complex digital preservation challenges and approaches to meeting needs and know how to more effectively advocate for and engage in core digital preservation activities.
